Lymphedema and Edema Treatment

Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, often an arm or leg. It results from accumulation of fluids triggered by removal or radiation of lymph nodes or vessels, such as happens during cancer surgery or treatment. Lymphedema can occur immediately after a medical procedure, or years later.

Lymphedema interferes with wound healing and provides an environment for bacteria, increasing the potential for infection. As swelling and inflammation persist, the tissue thickens and becomes fibrotic, causing discomfort and decreased mobility. This can lead to a worsening of condition, followed by depression and overall decline in health.

What Can Be Done?

We're Here To Help! Austin Wound & Lymphedema Center offers a comprehensive treatment program for lymphedema, with proven results, even in cases of long term lymphedema. We use a treatment called Combined Decongestive Therapy, which includes specialized massage, compression bandaging, exercise instruction and education on skin care and self-management.
